1. SIRTOLAR :
Dances : Iskele Sirtosu, Aziziye Sirtosu, Kına Sirtosu, Seherli Sirtosu, Karagözlü Sirtosu, Feslikan.
These dances are performed are boys and girls using different figures. In this dance they use their handkerchiefs.

2. KADIN KARSILAMASI : This dances is performed only by the girls.

3. ARABIYELER :
Dances:
Arabiye 1, Arabiye 2.

These dances are performed by the girls alone. They try to create an oriental atmosphere.

4. BAHRIYELI ÇIFTETELLISI : This dances is performed by the girl alone. The aim of the dances is to create an oriental atmosphere.

5. SUSTA : This dance is for both irls and boys. It start slowly and gradually gets
faster and faster.

6. DARI – ARABACI : These dances are performed are boys and girls. They start and finished at the same tempo.

7. KARTAL : This dance is performed only by boys. It portrays and  image of an eagle struggling to hunt for things.

8. BIÇAK (KASAP) OYUNU : This is danced by two boys. It demonstrater the skinning of animal after slaughter.

9. DEGIRMENCI : This  isdanced only by girls prefers to show of her physical charms and offer them to the miller, rather than pay for her wheat to be ground. Hower, the miller refuses her

10. SANDALA – MANDALA (TOPAL) : The dance enacts the story of young girl and her lame father. A young men asks the father for his dauthers hand in marriage. The father rejects him and beats him away with his stick.

11. KOZAN : This dance is performed at the henna night. It is danced by young men and women, but seperately. At the henna night the brides friends first dance arround the pitcher which is covered by a  red cloth. Then all the take the pitcher and dance with it one by one. At the end the pitcher is dropped and broken by the last of the girls.
When the pitcher is broken, the men dance and try to brake the pieces in to smaller pieces.
The broken pitcher is regarded as a symbol of good luck and happines;equality the number of broken pieces can predict the number of children. The newly-married couple will have.


INFORMATION ABOUT THE TOOLS

     There are certain tools, which were used  during folk dancing. These are :

1-      SICKLE :
Sickle  is used for cut to plans; the shape likes semi circle. Sickle is made by iron. It is a narrow and sharp, which is join a heads and used for cut the plans. The boy in the folk dance play sickle.
   
2-     BASKET :
Basket is used  for carry every kind of food. It is made by reed. The girls in the folk dance play basket.
 
3-      SIEVE :
Sieve is a separate thing, which is not belonging to flour. The girls in folk dance play it.
 
4-      FLATTISH BASKET :  
Flattish basket is used for to put food on it like a table. The girls in folk dance play it.
 
5-      PITCHER :
Pitcher is used for to keep cold water in the pitcher. The girls in the folk dance plays it.
 
 

THE  FOLK DANCE COSTUMES

OF THE NORTHERN CYPRUS

     The costumes vary according to the occasıon when they were worn,the age sex of the person and their social status. We are going to show some examples of these  costumes which we wear for our folk dance displays they are so attractive because they are full of  rich colours and dazzling embroidery.


WOMEN’S  COSTUMES
 

1.      Headscarves

a)      Yemeni, which is a kind of  headscarf, is full of delicate needlework called oya. These yemeni can be any color except black and any dark colors. For exaple, white, red, pink, purple, green, light blue, are the most common colors that are used.

b)      A colorful yemeni, or a yemeni decorated with oya is put over a fes  (a round felt hat). The front the fes is draped with gold coins on a thread and this arrangement is  called Mahmudiye.

2.      Yelek ( Waistcoat)
Yelek are usually made of bright fabrics such as velvet or satin. There are three types, full sleeve, half sleeve and sleeveless. The preferred colors are red, purple, burgundy and dark blue. The front, the back and the sleeves of these Yelek are embroidered with silver or gold thread. 

3.      Üçetek ( a kind of knee – length jacket )
The sides of this garment are open from above the waist to above the knee. Also, the front is open and because of is apperance (as if made in three piece – üç means three) . It is called üçetek. It is usually made of bright fabrics like velvet and satin. The hems of the sleeves and skirt, the shoulders and edges of the open panels are embroidered with colored or gold threads.
4.      Dantelli Don ( Long trousers Edged with lace )
These made of a plain white fabric edged with white, crocheted lace. 
5.      Iç Entari ( Under skirt )
Again it made of a plain white fabric, and comes down to just below the knee. The hems of the skirt are embroidered with colorful thread and edges with crocheted lace. 
6.      Gömlek ( Blouse )
This is made of a plain white fabric, the neckline is embroidered with lace and the hems of the sleeves are also edged with lace.
7.      Salvar ( Baggy trousers )
Originally Salvar were more commonly worn, gradually they were replaced by the dantelli don. Women’s salvar are made of plain or flowery patterned faric. They are baggy and pleated. The hems are narrow and gathered at the ankle. In some of  our dances we wear these salvar with a tül ( veil ) worn at the back of the fes. These dances are Çiftetelli, Arabiye and Bahriye Çiftetellisi.
8.      Kusak ( Sash )
A kusak, which is made of plain, white fabric with hems embroidered with colourful thread, is worn around the waist, knotted at one side.
9.      Mendil ( Hendkerchief )
The mendil is square and made of fine white fabric with embroidered edges. There are colorful ones, but the white ones are always preferred. The mendil had an important role in the courtship routines of olden times. Dropping, giving or sending a mendil indicates love for the receiver.
10.      Ayakkabı ( Shoes )

a)      A kind of shoe called iskarpin is worn with dantelli don. They have low heels and the top is made of leather. They are us

b)      ually brown in color.

c)       The shoes that are worn with salvar are like ballet shoes, having no heels  and the top is made of velvet.

11.      Takılar ( Jewellery )
One, two or three rows of gold coins are worn around the neck.
