THE  MUSIC OF CYPRUS TURKISH  FOLK DANCE

Turkish  Cypriot Folk Music is the mirror of our natural, social and traditional events. It is rich in the rhythm and colourful in tone. Our music and dance are a bridge between the  old culture and the culture of the future.

The characteristic features of our music are liveliness cheerfulness and    fluency. The  time-signatures that are used are ; simple time, compound time and mixed time , e.g :

a)  Simple time- 2/4   ,  4/4

b) Compound time- 6/8  ,  9/8  ,  12/8

c) Mixed time- 5/8  ,  7/8  ,  9/8

Some of our local songs ( Türküler ) and local dances (Oyun havaları) have no time – signatures. These are called uzun hava and are sometimes used in our dances.

Using instruments in representing Türküler and oyun havaları gives an individual liveliness and colour. The instruments that are used are ; violin ,accordion , clarinet , darbuka , def, ud, kaval, davul, zurna and zil. The violin is generally played in the first position. Glissandi and trills are often used, which make the music very exciting.
