MUSICAL INSTRUMENTS   

     The musical instruments used in Cyprus Rurkish Folklore are generally identical to those in Anatolian Folklore. The difference lie in the used of the instruments are in accordance with costumes and traditions. 

1. Kemane ( Violin ) “Kıbrıs Kemanesi” (The Cyprus Violin) :

     Long ago the Kıbrıs Kemanesi was locally made and contained to strings. This is  why folk dances danced to the music of this  instruments are colled   “ Çiftetelli “ . 

2. Tambura :

     Tambura is a very old traditional Turkish Musical instrument which is not in much use today. It has  been replaced by  “ Bağlama”  of the same family which survives to our times. 

3. Ud or Cümbüş ( A tybe of Lute ) :

     While not as old as Tambura, but of the same family. Ud is an instrument of Turkish Classical  music. It was previously used at court. Today it is in extensive use both in Turkey and Arabic countries. “ Lautta “ is an instrument similar to Ud with at marked keyboard and is used by the Greeks. 

4. Kaval “ Dillidüdük “ :

     Kaval  is a flute (Recorder type instruments made of cane with six holes on top one hole beneath. It is used by shepherds and has a sentimental sound. 

 

5. Dambuçi “ Elek Daire “ :

     This instrument is a sieve-like instrument covered with stretched hide. It’s used to keep the rhythm and is seen in various parts of Anatolia. Dambuçi has recently been replaced by “ Darbuka” and now it is “Darbuka” that is in wide use. 

6. Davul ( Drum ) :

     The Davul is very old Turkish musical instrument. It is  used open- spaces and open-air entertaintments. Davul is played with a Topuz or Tokmak (Drum-stick) and a Çirpi or Çomak (thin drum – stick) and is locally produced. 

7. Zurna ( A type of  Oboe )

     Zurna is usually played in company of Davul and is voiced by a need made from a kind of soft cane. Zurna is made of apricot wood. It has a powerful sound and is an old Turkish musical instrument. 

8. Def ( Teb ) :

     Mostly it is used in women’s dances. It is a type of drum that has a wood or iron  frame. Leather is streched over his frame. It’s diameter is 20 – 25 cm and it is round. 

9. ZİL :

     It’s  a pair of small metal discs that women dancers put on their fingers and then dance and play them. 

10. Klarnet ( Clarinet ) :

     It is a woodwich  instrument. The  bottom is wide and has a  cylindrical bore and a single reed. Our local instrument, which is like a clarinet , is called ney. 

11. Akardiyon ( Accordion ) :

     It is  musical instrument that is portable and fitte with bellows. It is played by opening and closing the bellows and presing the keys.
